Do or Don't

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  • After the JTE provides a grammar lesson on the board concerning the Imperative "Don't," the ALT then pronounces each of the verbs or verb phrases in the toolbox twice and students repeat each twice. The JTE selects students to provide the Japanese translation for each word after it has been pronounced and students are encouraged to write the translation above each word in the toolbox.
  • The JTE then instructs the students on how to complete the worksheet: There are a total of 17 sentence combinations (i.e., "Ride your bike here." "Don't ride your bike here.") and a corresponding picture for each sentence. Students either complete a sentence by choosing the correct verb or choose "Don't" plus the corrrect verb in the case where a "NO" symbol is present.
  • Once the students have completed their worksheets the ALT then selects volunteers to read a sentence combination.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • This was designed for New Horizon (book 1, unit 9, part 2, p 76) but can be used for any textbook.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • Dice may also be used to first choose a row and second to choose a student in the selected row.
