DETAILED EXPLANATION:

Put students in groups of 4-6

Hand out 1 game board, advice cards, and What's Wrong? cards to each group.

Have the students roll to see who goes first.

The first student rolls the dice and moves that many spaces. If he or she lands on a "What's Wrong?" space, they must take a "What's Wrong?" card. The student to their right will play the role of nurse and draw an "Advice" card. The 'sick' student must follow the advice.

Advice explanation:

  • "Go to the doctor" - Student must move their piece to the 'Doctor's Office' space
  • "Go to the nurse's office" - Student must move their piece to the 'Nurse's Office' space
  • "Rest for 1 hour" - Student must miss their next turn
  • "Rest for 2 hours" - Student must miss their next two turns
  • "Go home" - Student must move their piece to the 'Home' square at the beginning of the board

If students land on an active non card space, they must follow the directions given such as, "Move back two spaces.", "move forward one space". A white space has no action.

If students draw an, "I'm Fine!" card from the "What's Wrong?" pile, their nurse does not need to give advice.

VARIATIONS:

  • You can create your own game board and add different action spaces.
  • Have the students play with 2 pieces instead of just one. When both pieces cross the finish line, they win.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Make sure that students know the vocabulary and game actions well.

TIPS/CAUTIONS:

  • They will try to play without speaking English. Be sure to enforce it. You can make a penalty for not speaking English.
