I did this with most of my classes last year after the summer vacation.
Start with a short presentation about Canadian summer activities. This can be easily converted to American summer or just dropped in favor of talking about your own summer vacation.
Then a three choice quiz (mostly done in groups with an answer check after each group brought their answer) about summer festivals.
Most of the traditions were about bringing good luck and health.
Noteable is the Krisha Janmashtami in India. The kids dress up as Krishna and the human pyramid is made with the goal of knocking down the jar of buttermilk at the top. This will spill it on the people giving them good fortune for the year.
Finally an example of writing then the students write about their summers.
I cut the quiz to 5 questions with some classes to give more time for writing.
